Everyday farmers work, no matter the weather, no matter the news, no matter the circumstances of how the day turns out. Livestock need feed and we are always planning years in advance with no promise or guarantee. Its a gambling career to choose but there are its rewards and benefits. As with any career path chosen, there will be highs and lows and good days and challenging days and those days that you absolutely love life and those days you can't imagine what the future holds. Keep reading if you believe in hard work, determination and hope that the local family farm can still make it in todays economy.

I'll admit two of my flaws...1)being late and 2)having a goal in mind and having a one track mind to get there and see it through.

Prior to 2012 we had been a commercial cow/calf operation and sold feeders after weaning. We began retaining our calves for a feedlot operation in 2013. In 2014, we began selling our fed cattle off the farm to a few friends and family who requested it. They've been return customers and our customer base has grown significantly since the Covid pandemic. Our fed cattle have consistently been topping the pay scale at Lanesboro Commission Sale Barn, the packing plants recognize the quality we bring from our farm. We've been using black Angus bulls since 2020 and currently have 100 cow/calf pairs. Last year we sold 10 head as quarters, halves or whole with the processing done at the local USDA inspected butcher. I recently sold my business of 12 years with intentions of taking the butcher beef business to its next level. We have a farm shop, offer local delivery and a website that offers convenient reservation of beef shares, cuts and bundles.  The farm shop will be stocked with bundles and individual cuts/burger and we are discussing if farmers markets would fit into our routine. We are now implementing USDA Remote Grading of our Angus beef. This is necessary to know with certainty what grade (quality) we are offering to our customers. It is also necessary to grade our beef in order to partner with Certified Angus Beef® Ranch to Table. Not all Angus is equal. In order to earn the Certified Angus Beef® label, a carcass must meet 10 specific criteria. If its not Certified, its not the best. We're striving to bring the highest quality beef certified for flavor and born and raised right here in Whitehall.

We have a USDA graded Prime Certified Angus Beef® Prime beef in our shop freezers now. I've updated our online store with cuts and burger and roasts. You're welcome to order online and pick up at the farm store or come on in to see the marbling for yourself. We offer shipping, free local delivery and pick up. Subscribe to the "Herd Newsletter" to get updates of the farm and shop.
